As we start to see little glimpses of spring, many of us start to get that desire to spend time outside. It is also natural to want to tackle some larger cleaning projects that have sat on the back burner throughout the cold weather. Part of your spring cleaning checklist should include the exterior of your home. There are many aspects of the outside of your home that need some attention after a long winter. Big Ike’s Roofing Company is here to talk about some of the outdoor tasks that should make it to your spring cleaning list this spring.
The foundation of your home is important for obvious reasons. After a long winter, you should take the time to give your foundation a thorough check for any signs of cracking. You want to stay on top of any cracks to protect the integrity of your structure.
Look for Signs of Water Damage on Windows
You need to open all of your windows and view them from below. If there is any sign of water damage or rot, you will be able to see it this way. Wood windows are easier to detect signs of rot than aluminum clad windows. Opening them and checking them from the outside of your home is a great way to inspect them.
Check for Wood Rot Under Siding
If you have vinyl siding, you don’t have to worry about maintenance as much. For those that have wood siding, you need to inspect for signs of rot or damage. Especially around the bottom of the home and places that aren’t as protected by the soffits.
Clogged Gutters Cause Roof Leaks
Gutters that are operating properly are key to protecting your home from any water damage. Check your gutters and downspouts for any obstructions that prohibit the water from freely flowing away from your home in the case of a storm.
Winter can be brutal on your roof. The spring is an excellent time to check for any damage that may have happened during the severe weather that only the winter can bring. Look closely for any punctures or cracks in your shingles. Other signs that your shingles need repair is curling or sliding shingles. You can see these shingles from the ground, but to give your roof the inspection it needs, you need to get up on it for a closer look. This will give you the vantage point needed to decide if your need repair or replacement.
Check for White Efflorescence Spots Inside Fireplace & Chimney
While you are on your roof, you should give your chimney an thorough inspection as well. Check for signs of efflorescence, which is a white buildup of calcium that tells you that your chimney is absorbing water rather than repelling it.
