Icicles hanging from the roof may look pretty but they can be extremely destructive when they lead to ice dams. Ice dams are thick ridges of solid ice that build up along the valleys and eaves of your roof. Ice dams can cause multiple problems including tearing off gutters, loosening shingles and causing water to back up into your house. These water leaks can then lead to multiple interior problems such as peeling paint, warped floors, sagging ceilings and saturated insulation in the attic which can easily lead to mold and mildew growth.
How to Get Rid of Ice Dams
To get rid of existing ice dams and prevent future ice dams, the entire roof must be kept at the same temperature as the eaves. Big Ike’s Roofing Company achieves this principle using multiple methods such as increasing ventilation, adding insulation and sealing possible air leaks that might otherwise warm the underside of the roof. After a thorough inspection, Big Ike’s Roofing Company will present a custom recommendation that may include the following:
Ventilate Roof Ridge & Eaves. It is our goal to achieve an ideal balance between the air intake at your eaves and air exhaust at your roof ridge. A ridge, can or power vent, in conjunction with continuous soffit vents, circulates cold air under the entire roof. Big Ike’s Roofing Company will ensure that both roof ridge and soffit vents have the same size openings and provide at least one square foot of opening for every 300 square feet of attic floor. We will likely place baffles at the eaves to sustain a clear path for airflow from the soffit vents.
Cap the Attic Hatch. If your attic hatch or whole-house fan is unsealed, Big Ike’s Roofing Company will close this huge opening that is allowing significant heat to escape. We will cover the attic hatch with weatherstripped caps made from foil-faced foam board held together with aluminum tape.
Exhaust Venting to Outside. Big Ike’s Roofing Company will ensure that exhaust ducts connected to the bathroom, kitchen and dryer vents lead outdoors through the roof or walls and not through the soffit.
Add Insulation. Insulation on the attic floor keeps the heat where it belongs. More is generally better and Big Ike’s Roofing Company can determine how much insulation your attic needs and install the ideal amount.
Install Chimney Flashing. Big Ike’s Roofing Company can close the gap between the chimney and house framing with L-shaped steel flashing held in place with an effective fire-stop sealant.
