Vinyl siding is a popular choice among homeowners because it is virtually maintenance free. However, just like any other surface, it still needs to be cleaned. If you don’t clean it at least once a year, you will end up seeing unsightly staining and damage to your vinyl siding. Big Ike’s Roofing Co is here to share some tips to help you clean your vinyl siding.
Removing Dirt from Your Vinyl Siding
You can use either a pressure washer or a hose with a spray nozzle attached to it to clean your siding. There are some things to keep in mind when spraying your siding though:
– Keep the nozzle moving and the spray pattern on your pressure washer large enough that you don’t cause damage to your siding.
– With a cleanser, start cleaning from the bottom up. When you start to rinse, you can rinse from the top down.
– It’s important to avoid getting water behind the siding. To do this, you should spray down on the siding and in the direction of the overlapping joints.
Best Vinyl Siding Cleaner
To effectively remove the dirt and grime that builds up on your vinyl siding, you need to use a cleanser in the cleaning process. You will be surprised at how dirty your vinyl siding can get over the course of a few months. Start by mixing the following:
– 1 Gallon of Water
– 1/3 Cup Powdered Laundry Detergent
– 2/3 Cup Trisodium Phosphate Cleaner (TSP)
How to Clean Mold & Mildew from Vinyl Siding
Mold and mildew on your siding is a huge problem. The most effective way to remove it from your siding is with household bleach. You can mix 1 quart of household bleach to every gallon of water and get to work removing the mold. Before applying the bleach mixture to your siding, protect your landscaping plants or they will be damaged by the solution. Once the surface is prepared, you can start applying the bleach solution. It is best to apply it using a pump sprayer, and detrimental to the process that you leave the solution on the surface for 10 minutes before removing it. After it has had time to sit and work, use a soft bristled brush to gently scrub the siding and remove the mold and mildew.
Protect Yourself While Cleaning Vinyl Siding
Whenever you are dealing with strong cleaners like bleach and TSP, you should have the right protection. You should always wear gloves, long sleeved shirts, long pants and goggles to ensure you don’t have any contact with these chemicals. Another thing to remember is that you should never mix any of these chemicals with vinegar to clean. The combination can be lethal.
